RodeCaster Video Issues: Saving directly to your PC

I picked up the RØDECaster Video with the main goal to simplify my workflow.

I was tired of constantly pulling the SD card out of my camera, plugging it into my computer, and transferring footage just to get started with editing. It might not sound like a huge hassle, but when you do it every day it gets annoying pretty quick

Can the Rodecaster Video Save Directly to your computer?

My RØDECaster Video is recording straight to a Extreme Pro SSD, and that SSD is connected to the RØDECaster. The RØDECaster itself is connected to my MacBook via USB-C. So technically, the drive should show up on my desktop just like any other external storage.

But that’s not what happens.

Every time I start my computer or reboot the system, the drive doesn’t show up. It’s like the RØDECaster and the MacBook just don’t want to acknowledge each other. The only way to fix it is to unplug the USB-C cable from the Rodecaster and back into your PC.

It’s also inconvenient because reaching behind the rodecaster to find the right USB-C slot is difficult when doing it multiple times a day. I wish there was some kind of splitter, but the only solution is to keep a dedicated usb-c cable connected to my rode and a separate one connect to my Mac.

It Might Seem Small, But It Breaks the Workflow

The whole point of investing in something like the RØDECaster Video is to make things easier and more efficient. So when that promise breaks down right out of the gate, it’s a little frustrating.

I know it’s likely a firmware issue, and I’m hoping RØDE addresses it soon in an update. But in the meantime, I’m stuck with this weird workaround that slows me down.

What I Still Like — And What Needs Fixing

Don’t get me wrong — there’s a lot to like about the RØDECaster Video. The interface is clean, the touchscreen is intuitive, and the ability to record high-quality video and audio with multiple sources is impressive. It’s clearly built with creators in mind.

But bugs like this make the product feel unfinished. When you pay a premium price, you expect premium reliability — and having to manually reconnect a cable every time you want to access your files just doesn’t live up to that.

Final Thoughts

If you’re considering the RØDECaster Video for your setup and one of your goals is to simplify your media transfer process, just be aware of this issue. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s definitely something to factor in.
